Louisville Loss is good news for Big 10

College Football Preview – November 19

The Louisville loss to Houston Thursday night likely costs the Cardinals a shot to make the College Football Playoff. It may also have cost Lamar Jackson an opportunity to win the Heisman. More than anything, the beatdown ad the hands of Houston means Ohio State and Michigan both have increased their playoff chances.

If the Buckeyes beat Michigan next weekend, Penn State will advance to the Big 10 title game, likely against Wisconsin. A 9-2 Badgers team vs. a 9-2 Nittany Lions will likely pitt the 5th and 6th ranked teams in the poll, however a 10-1 Ohio State team could make the playoff over the conference champ.

What about Michigan? The loss last week to Iowa hurt them more than they realize. Should they beat Ohio State, they go to the Big 10 title game to play Wisconsin. A win there, and they are in. A loss in Columbus OR in the Big 10 title game, and they are toast.

Other teams who benefited from the Cardinals loss Thursday include Washington (#6), who end the season with Arizona State today, and then at Washington State on Black Friday. If they wrap up things at 11-1, the conference title game against USC or Colorado will be their shot to win their way in.

Oklahoma also has an outside chance, as the 2 loss Sooners can win out and hope the Big 12 gets an opportunity to be represented. While Bob Stoops and company need help, they first need to handle their own business vs. #14 West Virginia tonight.

Heading into today’s action, the key games to watch are below.

12PM EST Kickoff

#2. Ohio State vs. Michigan State
Urban Meyer will have his team charged up, reminding them the Spartans cost Ohio State their playoff spot last year. Buckeyes win big.

#7 Wisconsin vs. Purdue
The Badgers win today keeps their slim playoff hopes alive.

3:30PM EST Kickoff

#22 Washington State vs. #10 Colorado
A fascinating game for the casual Pac 12 supporter, as a sound Colorado win keeps the conference strength of schedule high, however if Washington State remains unbeaten in conference play, the Apple Cup becomes must see TV.

7PM EST Kickoff

#4 Clemson vs. Wake Forest
The Tigers dodged a major bullet, as their loss came on the perfect week (everyone else lost, too.). Expect Deshaun Watson to bounce back, and Clemson to put this one away early.

8PM EST Kickoff

#9 Oklahoma vs. #14 West Virginia
As noted, the Sooners AND the Big 12 need Oklahoma to win tonight. Realistically, they are the only team that has a chance to make the playoff.

10:30PM EST Kickoff

#13 USC vs. UCLA

All week, the Trojans have been hearing how great they are after their beatdown of Washington. One surprising finish could end up coming here tonight. UCLA would love nothing more than to ruin any hope of USC playing in the Pac 12 title game. Here is their chance.
