Russell Westbook on pace to average a triple double
Russell Westbook is playing like a man with something to prove. After notching his seventh triple double of the young regular season Saturday, Westbrook brushed off questions about the significance of the feat. “I’m happy we won, that’s the important part for me”. Westbrook, who now has 44 triple doubles for his career, tied LeBron James sixth ALL TIME. He has played in 18 games so far, and is averaging 31.1 points, 11.1 assists and 9.9 rebounds for 10-8 Thunder.
We all knew it wasn’t going to be easy in this first year without Kevin Durant, but Westbrook is doing everything in his power to make the fans and his teammates forget about the former star’s presence on the court. For those who feel he may be padding his stats when he gets triple doubles, think again. OKC needs every point, rebound, and dish they can get, and when Russ is on, they win more times than not. The team is 5-2 this season and 38-6 overall in Westbrook triple double games.
Oscar Robertson is the only player to average a triple double for the entire season.
Drawing comparisons to the likes of Jason Kidd and Magic Johnson, Russ has embraced the additional ball handling responsibilities that once were left for Reggie Jackson and DJ Augustin in the Scott Brooks era. Billy Donovan trusts Westbrook’s decision making, and in return, is getting his very best.
